Water transfers heat from the body up to 25 times faster than air which means divers will quickly start to feel the cold without protection, the colder the water the quicker the onset and the greater the need for undersuits and base layers.With undersuits, you have the option to wear them in one or two pieces. These all have extra padding in areas where body heat is lost the fastest.Undersuits are generally made from materials similar to fleece, your undersuit’s purpose is to trap your body heat during your dives. An insulating layer then forms between each layer of clothing you have on.The style and thickness of your undersuit will be determined by the drysuit you are wearing, the temperature of the water, and how long you will dive for. Since drysuits have their own thermal properties, some are much better than others. Membrane suits are much warmer and require thinner undersuits but membrane suits provide very little thermal protection and therefore require thicker or even layered undersuits.Some divers also wear a base layer. This close-fitting part of your underclothing will keep you dry by wicking water away from your skin as if it was perspiration. A dry area is better insulation than a wet one that will cool your body. Some base layer products are also odor resistant and have antifungal properties.
